              From the desk of author

It is very unusual for someone to write something against the system which he or she is practicing. The idea of doing so is equally disgusting. It is akin to cutting the branch of tree on which one sits. The very thought of sharing these views has been postponed by me for many years until the idea was communicated to Dr. Manjeet Singh Oberoi (MBBS, M.D. Neurology, HOD Neurology, Additional Medical Superintendent Safdarjung Hospital) and Dr. Ajay Grover, Vice President Datavya Charitable Clinic, A.B. Foundation( Ex. Director, Ex. Head Operations- Drug Demand Reduction Training Institute, Navjyoti India Foundation). The whole concept could be materialized because of constant inspiration and support from Dr. Manjeet Singh and intensive labour by Dr. Ajay Grover and Dr. Tushita, CMO Datavya Charitable Clinic, A.B. Foundation. It was Dr. Manjeet Singh who persuaded me to put my thoughts before profession through presentation of my paper “Homoeopathic law of similars-is it really a law “ in LIGA 2011 held at Sirifort Auditorium New Delhi and It is through efforts of Dr. Ajay grover, the idea of this website could be planned and actualized.

It is very important at the outset to give my own introduction as a Homoeopath. I graduated from Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College, Delhi University which is one of the premier institutes for providing homoeopathic education in India as well as in Asia with a good academic record winning gold medal for the year 1985. I did my house job from the same hospital and got job of Research Assistant in Central Council for Homoeopathy in 1987. This job provided me enough exposure to different fields of research conducted by CCRH. Initially I was posted at Regional Research Institute at NHMC premises where I had exposure to  clinical research conducted on various diseases such as Psoriasis, Allergic Dermatitis, Warts under the able guidance of a skin specialist Dr. Ramji Gupta as well as Dr. R.K.Manchanda now Director CCRH who was working as Assistant Research Officer at that time. We had a good team of research workers like Dr. Hari Singh and his wife Dr. Asha Hari Singh. Dr. D. P. Rastogi, then Director CCRH;  also used to come once in a week to review cases of cancer under Iscador therapy. The other Clinical research diseases were Evaluation of effective homoeopathic remedies in different diseases like Bronchial asthma, Diabetes mellitus, Hypercholesterolemia, Cervicitis and Cervical erosion. I also participated in drug proving research being drug proving master for few of the programs as well as clinical verification research done in OPD as well as through mobile health van. Clinical verification research included research on selected drugs (around sixty four at that time) that were proved by CCRH and mostly of Indian origin. This created a familiarity with Indian drugs and I did prepare a repertory of Indian drugs from drugs of Hindustan for personal use. A therapeutic index for Indian drugs was also prepared under guidance of Dr. Hari Singh. CCRH also provided an opportunity to attend certain epidemics in Delhi as well as Uttar Pradesh and this involved collecting the symptomatology of the epidemic and distributing   prophylactics.

After five years I was posted at Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, head office at Janakpuri under the directorship of Dr. D.P.Rastogi. Dr. D. P. Rastogi needs no introduction and under his able guidance I had a chance to review the various research programs conducted by CCRH with an access to international research through the various seminars and conferences. Dr. Rastogi had all the qualities of a good leader and his life was totally devoted to the cause of homoeopathy. It was during his directorship that CCRH established its identity not only at national level but also at international level. He had interaction with the leading international physicians through participation in LIGA conferences. I am witness to several of his papers related to various research studies as well as his participation in many international projects that included evaluation of drugs proved in India and Meta analysis of clinical trials conducted in India. It was the golden period of my life as regard to development of my knowledge related to homoeopathy as I had an access to latest development in homoeopathic literature as well as homoeopathic software’s.

I left CCRH in 1998 because I got selected as Medical Officer (Hom.) in New Delhi Municipal Council, New Delhi which offered better scale and stability of job which the research could not offer at that time. CCRH however had provided me an access to everything i.e. literature, computers, latest homoeopathic software right in the beginning when they were launched.

Everything was moving right until I was posted in one of the NDMC dispensaries. There happened to be an Ayurvedic dispensary in the same complex. Naturally as taught in Organon of medicine, I had my fixed ideas that Ayurvedic medicines that they act on the basis of law of antipathy and therefore they do not provide long term relief to the patient. There was another misconcept that Ayurvedic physicians use heavy metals as off and on we find such type of news in newspaper and their use could cause kidney or liver damage.  It was to my surprise that when I joined the dispensary, the number of patients visiting Ayurvedic dispensary were more than mine. It was a slum area and I thought that since Ayurvedic medicines were distributed in big bottles and naturally the lay persons had more faith on bottles than on homoeopathic pills.  I had all the notions that this fellow must be giving temporary relief to the patients. But during course of time, I found that it was not true and that too with skin cases like Urticaria as well as Asthma were getting relief. The patients got relief lasting for months without apparent side effects. Similarly joint problems did respond in the same way. After two years I was posted in another place and there was no Ayurvedic dispensary in the complex. I forgot the issue but many questions persisted in my mind as to the statements made about Ayurveda in the Organon of Medicine.

In the meantime, it happened that I was treated as a leave reserve physician for few years and I had a chance to sit in almost all the homoeopathic dispensaries of NDMC from days to weeks or months whenever any physician went on leave. One day, in one of the dispensaries, the homoeopathic doctor had kept two  Ayurvedic books on his table.  One of them was a book on Rasa Shastra i.e. Use of metals in Ayurveda. There were several articles in that book on use of mercury, sulphur, arsenic, cuprum, gold etc. Mercury and sulphur were granted the status of maharasa (most important remdies) used in variety of disease with an entirely different approach. I could not digest these statements as till that time as far as I could know and recollect that it was Hahnemann who dared to use such medicines through the concept of drug proving and that too in potentised form. It was a real eye opener for me as till that time I did not think of any other system of medicine that used mercury and all sorts of other metals in a way other than Homoeopathy. I used to be proud of number as well as diversity of homoeopathic medicines derived from different sources along with the concept of drug proving to utilize them. Gradually after studying Ayurveda, I came to know that their knowledge of materia medica in the form of medicines and different foods is much wider than homoeopathy and that too from an entirely different approach. In fact some of the statements were similar to those found in homoeopathy. That book did mention about qualities of an Ayurvedic physicians which were much more advanced than those mentioned by Hahnemann. This book increased the number of questions about my own system.

I used to go through books on Indian medicinal plants kept in our NDMC library and the book on Medicinal plants by Reader digest’s publication really changed my beliefs. This book dealt with many plants that were common to homoeopathy. I was amazed to find that most of the non toxic plants used in homoeopathy had identical herbal indications. One statement about the use of Drosera in tuberculosis did put me in great turmoil as Dr. Tyler had tried this medicine in tuberclosis with success but she had tried to correlate this action with law of similars on the basis of observations on animals eating Drosera plant. It was becoming clear to me that homoeopathic Materia Medica in the form of drug proving symptoms has great limitations with respect to certain previously known action of the drugs.

Medicinal plants have been known since Hippocrates and used by physicians before and also after Hahnemann’s time. Homoeopathic Materia Medica is silent over such issues and there are no comparative studies as to the change in the drug usage after drug proving and that too with the application of law of similars as well as crude dose versus potentized medicines.

Thereafter I started comparing usage of homoeopathic medicinal plants  that are common to Ayurveda. I am especially thankful to Dr. S.K. Arya, Chief Ayurvedic Physician NDMC for introducing me the basic principles of Ayurveda and recommending some beautiful books on Ayurveda for further reading. It was during my posting at NDMC main building at Palika Kendra, I came in contact with him.

This was the beginning of a new thought and now it needed team work. I was joined by Dr. Ajay Grover and he was an already an experienced compiler of literature. He had worked as with Dr. J.P.S.Bakshi for compilation of several chapters on Phoenix Repertory. In no time we had access to a large number of books on herbal medicines sourced from different libraries including National Medical Library. Many websites were also searched to see different usage of homoeopathic drugs under eclectic medicine. Even World Health Organization’s Monographs on Selected Medicinal Plants were also downloaded to see and compare the action of certain medicines. The action of mineral remedies was also compared with that available on different websites and books.

There are many more issues than mere action of medicine. The careful prescriber uses as few remedies as possible in his prescriptions. The ideal method, possibly is to exhibit but one drug at a time. But certain remedies have been found to be synergistic, and experience has shown the wisdom of their intelligent combination. Medicines are not to be expected to supplant conservative and intelligent surgery, dietetics, hygiene and other forms of therapeutics recognized and used by all physicians; but presuppose a close alliance with all these forms of treatment. A comparison of Homoeopathic principles with that of Ayurveda is also being done and the findings will be placed on this website.

Through our extensive study of medical literature including homoeopathy, Ayurveda, eclectic and herbal and clinical experience spanning several years; we bring to you homoeopathy added value. The results of the hard work put in have been very promising and we take this platform to share them with medical fraternity and patients. We welcome patients suffering from respiratory and skin allergies, psoriasis, migrane, thyroid disorders, hairloss, polycystic ovaries, fibromyoma uterus, irritable bowel syndrome, and others not having results with other medication.

We would also like to introduce Datavya Charitable Clinic.
Datavya Charitable Clinic run by A.B. Foundation started as a small effort towards providing cost effective quality medical care in Nayabaans area, sector-16 noida In November 2008. Though there are two government hospitals namely Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital , Kalayanpuri and Distt. Hospital, Noida one still felt the need of an accessible healthcare facility to the large population of the area. Datavya is successfully bridging the gap.
We started our journey on the 15th of November 2008 with two homoeopathic consultants, one allopathic consultant and a dispenser. Tireless efforts of our team to popularize the clinic in form of pamphlet distribution and door to door publicity started bearing its fruits within a few months. With the addition of a pathology laboratory the patient footfalls began to rise. As per the need of the area the clinic was soon further expanded to include an X-Ray department and full time 10am-6pm consultants of both the specialties. A special need for antenatal care clinic was recognized soon and a gynecologist appointed.

As doctors we learnt that a few diseases requiring medical attention are quite prevalent in this area. These include Pulmonary Tuberculosis: Patients are examined by our doctors and screened with chest X-ray and referred to the nearby DOTS center for anti tubercular treatment,Filariasis: The migrant population from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar frequently suffers from the condition. We are treating it very successfully with help of homoeopathy,Scabies,Diarrhea in school going children,Enteric Fever,Eczemas and female disorders. The number of pregnant women attending our antenatal clinic is increasing by the day. We are being very successful in our key objective to ensure that women present for antenatal care are diagnosed early in pregnancy for any disease in order to allow enough time for essential treatment regimens.

What started as a small initiative blossomed into the preferred healthcare facility for the families in the area and beyond.Till date we have served more than nearly four lac patients. We have provided these services absolutely free for the initial one and half years.Later we started making it participatory by charging minimal amount due to the paucity of funds. As paucity of funds increased we had to do away with services of allopathy. Presently we are running a homoeopathic opd along with a pathology lab and x-ray dept.
